Digital Commissions

Scene Stirling aims to address the impact of digital exclusion on the creative and cultural community in Stirling caused by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Our Digital Commissions offer an opportunity to Stirling based creatives to transform their practice through digital.

In 2021 we awarded digital commissions to 5 local artists, including creative writer Izzy Brims, choreographer and dancer Malcolm Sutherland, illustrator David Galletly, sculptor Ken Elliott and multi-disciplinary artist Jules McAllister.

As part of the programme, each creative was matched with a leading industry mentor to ensure the success of their project and received a £1,500 bursary, including professional training to build their digital skills and knowledge.

KEN ELLIOTT

Sculptor Ken Elliott, whose work has been displayed by the Engine Shed and Stirling University Art Collection, only discovered his talent two years ago.

His artistic practice has quickly developed from the production of pen and ink hand-coloured drawings, to computer-controlled wood carving and metal sculpture. Ken has created a series of natural world-themed sculptures, produced into a 360-degree video as part of his commission.

Malcolm Sutherland

Malcolm Sutherland is a choreographer and dancer from Dunblane, with thirteen years of professional experience working internationally across state theatres and dance projects all over the world. He has been commissioned to create a unique, audio-visual experience incorporating dance, visual imagery, and sound.

‘In Absentia’ is an investigation into the sense of absence created in a theatre environment without the performers present. This explores the sense of absence created within the performer without their recognised stage setting to perform in.

IZZY BRIMS

University of Stirling creative writing graduate Izzy Brims has been commissioned to write a series of stories showcasing five creative women living with disabilities from Stirlingshire.

Worthi magazine acts as a platform for fellow disabled creatives within the Stirling area to discuss their work and raise awareness of their disabilities, chronic health conditions and mental health.

David Galletly

David Galletly is an artist, illustrator and graphic designer from Stirling.

He has been commissioned to curate, create and design a new podcast series called ‘See Saw’ featuring local creative professionals – promoting his home city as a great place to live and work.

RUE FIVE

Rue Five is a self taught artist originally from Stirling, currently living in Glasgow. His commission was to design a virtual exhibition tour with public artworks, made up with murals, signs and sculptures.

Rue Five is interested in the hauntological aspects of liminal places and hopes to interact with the real or imagined histories of these spaces both personal and public.
