WARM WELCOME AT WINTER COORIE

Over fifty local people attended a specially curated immersive audio experience in Callander last Wednesday, entitled Tracing Light in Darkness.

The event, held at St Andrews Scottish Episcopal Church on December 13, featured a unique seasonal-themed sound piece created by artist Saffy Setohy and composer Jamie McCarthy in collaboration with residents from across West Stirlingshire.

Attendees were offered blankets and hot chocolate, creating a cosy atmosphere perfectly suited for enjoying the specially crafted piece – a poignant part of Stirling's Covid memorial project, Remembering Together.

Saffy Setohy shared, "The aim of our 'Winter Coorie' was to offer a space for relaxation and contemplation amidst the hustle and bustle of the winter season. Winter, or the darker part of the year, can be a time for contemplation. Changes in nature might encourage us to slow, down, rest and reflect.

“Covid was an extended time of pause for many. Reflecting the increased appreciation of nature and community felt keenly by people throughout the pandemic, Tracing Light in Darkness blends conversations with local people, music and nature sounds into a celebratory meditation on the beauty and solace of winter, nature, connection, slowing down, hope and gratitude as we approach the winter solstice.”

“We would like to extend our thanks to Stirling Council Libraries, Callander Youth Project, and Walk in the Park for their invaluable support in connecting us with local communities and engaging participants.”

In addition to the live event, efforts were made to involve those unable to attend in person. As part of the project, 150 creative activity packs designed by Callander-based artist Orla Stevens were distributed through the rural library bus network.

Saffy explained, "Our hope is that communities will engage with these packs, creating their own winter landscape pieces and proudly displaying them in their windows, fostering creativity within their own neighbourhoods."

The sound piece was also broadcast live via Instagram on the day of the event and is now available to listen to online. For further information about Remembering Together and to listen to the sound piece visit: www.scenestirling.com/rememberingtogether.

The December event follows the success of the project’s 'Autumn Coorie' in Plean in November, where young people and care home residents celebrated the changing seasons with live music and crafting activities.
