INCANTATIONS IBRINA PREMIERE

Scene Stirling is proud to present Incantations: iBrina by Tape Rituals.

A film following Falkirk based reggae artist iBrina on a journey of self-expression, reclamation and empowerment.

The project, funded by a Scene Stirling Unlearning Open Grant, was led by Stirlingshire based musician and filmmaker Omar Aborida of Tape Rituals.

Omar said: “The film draws from performance footage and conversational interviews to illuminate iBrina’s creative workflow and practice as well as her connection to Scotland.”

Subrina Ward, aka iBrina, is a Jamaican reggae artist based in Falkirk.

The film begins with her performance of 'Endangered Species' written by Dianne Reeves at The Dunmore Pineapple.

Omar said: “The location is significant as it is a remnant of Scotland's colonial past."

iBrina describes her performance here as: "Subverting, overcoming, being victorious in very small ways and helping the dialogue of Scotland to look fairly at their involvement [in the colonial past] to right the wrongs of the past."

The next performance takes us to the Recital Room in Glasgow City Halls where iBrina performs a section of her song 'Ferryman' alongside her band; part of her 'Homage to Home' show curated by Celtic Connections and Events Scotland for Scotland’s Year of Stories 2022.

The final part of the film sees iBrina introduce her new single 'Be Ready'.

Omar said: “iBrina is a lover of nature and the song is performed in one of her favourite garden spaces beside the Union Canal in Falkirk.”
