In January 2020, Stirling and District Embroiderers’ Guild began producing work around the theme ‘Flights of Fancy’, exploring concepts surrounding birds and reverie.

When guild-members found themselves confined to their homes due to lockdown restrictions two months later, this theme took on a new meaning.

These new circumstances allowed the artists to take leaps of the imagination resulting in a diverse range of textile art, which is now on show at the Stirling Smith until 15 November 2020.

Stirling and Districts Embroiderers’ Guild has over thirty members made up of professional textile artists, teachers, and amateurs.

In addition to exhibiting individual works, the branch has worked on many local projects including an altar cloth designed by Malcolm Lochhead for the Chapel Royal at Stirling Castle, panels for Strathcarron Hospice, a replica of the Stirling Blue Blanket and banner for the Incorporated Trades of the City of Stirling, and a hanging for the Wallace Monument created in cooperation with the Scottish Region of the Embroiderers’ Guild.
